Monday, April 11, Spy vs. Spy at Sandy Hook Given the beautiful weather this past Saturday, it was a natural to head down to Sandy Hook for some wandering. It’s one of my favorite places to go, because it combines a couple of my favorite things: This week’s jaunt was a solo Sue expedition, since Ivan had to pull some pretty heavy overtime at work. And yes, I fit in some history with the birds since two of the site’s aging weapons batteries were open to visitation. A squadron of nuclear weapons ringed major U.
Until the development of intercontinental ballistic missiles in the early 70’s, the last defense America had against Soviet incursion was the Nike Ajax missile, and then the nuclear-tipped Nike Hercules.
This is a short and relatively uninteresting section of the coast, mostly along bike paths at the side of the coastal road. Unfortunately, the ocean is not often visible here and most of the beaches are private. This is only about 7 miles, but is sufficiently different in character from the road further south that I’ve made a separate report for this short road.
Council ingenuity originally produced the double-edged axe handle style Bush Hook. They are designed for heavy-duty clearing and shrugging of tough vines, weeds, undergrowth and small saplings.
Use fresh rather then frozen Bunker if you can get it. When chumming be sure not to be too generous or skimpy with the chum. It’s a good idea to release chum at 2 to 3 minute intervals to keep a consistent chum slick and hold fish. Too much chum and the fish will hang back for the easy meal and not bother to move up into the slick for your baits. Too little chum and your not going to hold or attract fish. Trolling speed is not too critical for bluefish. When trolling bunker spoons slow it down until you see your pole pulsing in an erratic side to side and bobbing motion.
When trolling other lures like tubes, jigs, and umbrella rigs try and stay close to the bottom without hanging up. Pay line out until you feel contact with the bottom and then reel in just enough line to keep your lure from hanging bottom.

By Brother Nathanael Kapner Copyright There are so many unanswered questions regarding the Sandy Hook killings that it not only boggles the mind but inspires anger and legitimate outrage. Even Lieutenant Paul Vance, head of the Connecticut State Troopers, admits that much information surrounding the crime is being withheld. But there also some issues that we need to keep the cards close to the chest. And what about the first responders? Why were they not allowed to enter the school until DAYS after the murders?

Click here to see if there is a Groupon available I would recommend going early and boarding at the first stop E 35th St. I do want to emphasize there are not very many seats outside. Not too far from the nude beach is the Sandy Hook lighthouse, which is the oldest working lighthouse in the United States.
